A hydraulic tensioner is provided to leak oil from a high pressure chamber to an outside of a housing regardless of a position of a ball biasing spring by forming an oil guiding slit between retainer leg parts of a bell shaped retainer. In a hydraulic tensioner comprising a housing(110), a plunger(120), a plunger biasing spring, and a check valve unit(140) including a ball seat(141), a check ball(142), a ball biasing spring(143), and a bell shaped retainer(144); the bell shaped retainer of the check valve unit supports the ball biasing spring, and consists of a ball encircling part surrounding the check ball to be rotated, and multiple retainer leg parts diverged from the ball encircling part and driving fitted to an outer periphery of the ball seat as widened. An oil guiding slit(S) is formed between the retainer leg parts, to supply oil from an oil path in the ball seat to a high pressure chamber(R), and to leak the high pressure oil in the high pressure chamber to an outside of the housing through a sliding periphery of a plunger retaining hole(111).
