An apparatus and a method for setting network parameters automatically in a portable terminal are provided to search a DB in the portable terminal to set network parameters automatically when there is setting information in the DB and request a provider server to provide the setting information and set the network parameters when there is no setting information in the DB, thereby providing convenience to a user. A memory unit(103) stores information about set communication providers and information about network parameter settings. A setting DB(104) stores the network parameter setting information of each predetermined communication provider. A smart card(106) has information about communication provider to receive a service. A setting searching unit(108) searches the network parameter information corresponding to the communication provider to receive the service, which is required by the smart card, in the setting DB. A setting processing unit(107) determines that the information about the set communication providers is identical with the information about the communication provider to receive the service, searches network parameter information corresponding to the communication provider to receive the service through the setting searching unit when the compared information are not the same, and sets a network by using the searched network parameters.
