The container (1) has a cover (2) supported at an upper edge (5) of a container (9) by a hinge (4), and movable from a closed position to an open position by a pedal (13). A rotational movement of the pedal is transmitted over a connecting rod (15) on the cover. The connecting rod includes a bar (18) arranged on a rear wall (8) of the container and vertically movably supported by activation of the pedal. The bar slidably rests at a distance to the hinge at an innerside (21) of the cover at an upper end. A roller (20) is provided with a roller bearing.
