BISTABLE NEMATIC LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY DEVICE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately and easily perform minute control of bistability. SOLUTION: A bistable nematic liquid crystal display device has a pair of substrates 11 and 17, a liquid crystal layer 22 disposed between the pair of substrates 11 and 17 and a liquid crystal alignment layer disposed between the liquid crystal layer 22 and at least either one of the pair of substrates 11 and 17. The liquid crystal display device further has two pairs of in-plane switching (IPS or FFS) electrode structures on at least one side of the liquid crystal alignment layer, using a nano imprint lithographic technique as a surface treatment method of the liquid crystal alignment layer for aligning the liquid crystal and obtaining bistability and using a heat transfer or concentration transfer type nematic liquid crystal for the liquid crystal layer.
