A photographing apparatus having an auto-stabilizing function and a method of controlling the apparatus are provided to reduce the number of chips which process a motion detection result and a position variation detection result to produce a compact photographing apparatus. A photographing apparatus having an auto-stabilizing function includes a photographing unit, a motion detector(210), a position detector(220), a signal selector(230), an analog-to-digital converter(240), and a motion corrector(250). The photographing unit photographs an image. The motion detector detects motion of the photographing apparatus. The position detector detects a position variation of the photographing unit. The signal selector sequentially outputs signals received from the motion detector and the position detector. The analog-to-digital converter converts the signals output from the signal selector into digital signals. The motion corrector generates motion data by using the digital signals output from the analog-to-digital converter.
