A method for backing up files is provided to perform file backup in a computer efficiently by effectively replacing a part, which detects the modified files in real-time, and a part, which determines whether the modified file is the file to be backed up, wherein the parts cause degradation of computer performance. A first backup target selector(1) selects a backup target file by using a recent document function provided from an OS(Operating System) and a file modification time. A second backup target selector(2) selects the backup target file again by using a backup target pattern set by a user. A backup target storing part(3) is a place for storing the backup target files, and is a local disk, an external USB(Universal Serial Bus) disk, and an FTP(File Transfer Protocol) server. A file modification time editor(4) edits the file modification time to prevent overlapped backup. The edited file modification time is used for determining previous backup in the first backup target selector.
