An electric power assist steering apparatus equipped with a gap compensating device is provided to prevent a bearing from being damaged by installing an elastic member of surrounding an outer race of the bearing and a stopper between the elastic member and a housing. An electric power assist steering apparatus comprises a worm wheel(302) connected to a steering shaft, a worm shaft(320) having a worm(322) at an outer surface, bearings(352,354) provided at two end of the worm shaft, a motor connected to the worm shaft, a housing(310) and a gap compensating device(340). The worm meshes with the worm wheel. The housing has a coupling hole formed at an opposite side of the motor and an insertion hole formed at an inner surface around an outer circumference of the first bearing. The gap compensating device includes a reducer(360) of surrounding the outer circumference of the first bearing and a stopper(370) provided at an outer side of the reducing member.
