The exchanger (28) has cooling stages (24, 26) assembled in housing, and respectively defined by two series of canals. A distribution unit distributes gas e.g. air, between the cooling stages to modify number of canals in one of the series of canals, so as to adapt an exchange surface of each cooling stage with instantaneous operating conditions of a diesel engine. A movable shutter (70) is placed in the housing between a flow line bundle (62) and gas inlets (50, 54) or gas outlets (52, 56).
