A burner assembly 10 has two burners namely a granular fuel burner 11 and a fluid fuel fired burner 12. The granular fuel burner is in association with a brazier 13 which is fed with the granular fuel, for example wood pellets 25. The fluid fired burner is mounted remote from the brazier such that in use a flame generated by the fluid fired burner is directed beside and substantially away from the brazier. A flame transfer device 15 is provided to direct some of the flame generated by the fluid fired burner as a concentrated jet against a portion of the granulated fuel, and cause ignition. The flame transfer device may include either a tube (31 Fig 5) or a flap 16, and the tube or flap may be positioned in the path of the flame such as to direct it onto the granular fuel. The burner assembly is arranged in a water heater 1 provided with hollow heat exchangers 7, 8, that carry water to be heated. The concentrated jet of flame provides efficient ignition and a substantial reduction in CO generation, and both burners may be used together, permitting additional heat output from the boiler. |
