A method and an apparatus for configuring a frame in a communication system are provided to reduce an additional overhead by configuring burst regions of a multi-frame as a single zone and supporting various transmission schemes. A base station generates a preamble signal having a sector ID for obtaining synchronization between terminals(601). The base station generates a common channel including system information such as a ratio of a downlink area and an uplink area, a diversity and a band AMC allocation rate to a scheduler of the base station(603). The base station generates a MAP according to the system information and CQI(Channel Quality Indicator)(605). The base station maps burst areas, namely, subchannels(607). The base station modulates the generated frame and transmits it to a wireless antenna(609).
