Zoom lens of the retrofocus type excellently correcting various aberrations and compact, lightweight. The zoom consists of, in order from the object, a first group (G1) having negative power, a second group (G2) having positive power. Upon zooming from wide-angle end (W) to telephoto end (T), the distance between the first group (G1) and the second group (G2) decreases. The first group (G1) consists of, in order from the object, a first lens (L1) having negative power and a second lens (L2) having positive power. The second group (G2) consists of, in order from the object, a third lens (L3) having positive power, a fourth lens (L4) having negative power, and a fifth lens (L5) having positive power. The thickness (S2) of the second lens group (G2) fulfils : 0,76 < S2/fw < 1,30.
