A process for preparing N-methyl pyrrolidone is provided to improve purity and yield of N-methyl pyrrolidone by performing the two-stage continuous process without refinement of gamma-butyrolactone as intermediate of reaction by using the metal oxide solid phase catalyst having excellent reactivity, thereby mass producing N-methyl pyrrolidone. The process for preparing N-methyl pyrrolidone comprises the steps of: dehydrogenating 1,4-butandiol in the presence of the metal oxide solid phase catalyst under hydrogen condition to prepare gamma-butyrolactone; and directly introducing the gamma-butyrolactone obtained from the first process without refinement, and dehydrogenating the gamma-butyrolactone with monomethylamine in the presence of the metal oxide solid phase catalyst.
