An apparatus and a method for controlling audio special play in a digital device are provided to execute the audio special reproducing operation corresponding to operation of a user by setting an audio special play mode when wheel scroll is detected and controlling the forward/reverse reading of audio data and the decoding speed according to the direction and speed of the wheel scroll. A digital device comprises a storage(10), a reader(11), a decoder(12), a buffer(13), a mixer(14), a microcomputer(15), an effective sound generating part(16), an effective image generating part(17), a display(18), a scroll detection part(19), and a key pad(20). The microcomputer reads audio data stored in the storage by controlling the reader and decodes the read audio data by controlling the decoder. When vertical or horizontal wheel scroll is detected, the microcomputer sets a special generating mode and checks the direction and speed of the wheel scroll. The audio data reading direction of the reader and the decoding speed of the decoder are controlled variably based on the direction and speed of the wheel scroll.
