A protecting apparatus and method for a compressor is provided to measuring level of refrigeration oil stored in a compressor and viscosity of refrigeration oil fed to a mechanism part by using a detecting unit having a light source and a reflective mirror. A protecting apparatus for a compressor comprises a detecting unit(50) and a control unit(60). The detecting unit is installed at a case in which a compressing unit and a motor unit are installed and detects refractive index of refrigeration oil and refrigerant mixture in the case. The control unit controls rotation of the motor unit according to refractive index detected by the detecting unit. The detecting unit includes a light source, a reflective mirror, and a calculation unit. The light source is installed in the case. The reflective mirror is installed to reflect lights from the light source. The calculation unit is installed to calculate wavelength change of the lights from the reflective mirror.
