A device is disclosed for use in transferring an immobile patient from a bed to a gurney or vice versa. The device is for use with a base and a sheet having a first end and a second end. The device comprises a roller having a fixed length, said roller having a first end and a second end extending in a longitudinal direction. Two journals are attached to said roller, at least one of said journals being moveable in the longitudinal direction and two bearing members, each bearing member adapted to be removably and rotatably secured to a respective one of said journals of said roller; and means for securing said roller and said sleeves to a sheet.
