The method involves cutting through an abdominal wall and a sternum by vertically downward directional movement of a cutting tool (28). A pressure element (44) with retainers is attached to an animal (14) e.g. pig, to be slaughtered, where the retainers have a minimum distance in their foreleg facing ends during immersion between forelegs. The forelegs are straddled based on anatomy of the animal detected by scanning after the sternum is cut through over a preset length without the occurrence of an over expansion and without drawing out the pressure element from the animal.
