The method involves determining crude waste gas amounts of an internal combustion engine (10), and determining the conversion ability for individual components of an exhaust-gas purification system (20). The exhaust gas dispensing is determined from the standardized crude waste gas amount and the conversion ability for the individual components and compared with a predetermined diagnostic threshold. The individual components are arranged one after another in an exhaust gas flow direction. An independent claim is also included for a device for diagnosing a single-or multi-stage exhaust gas purification system in an exhaust gas line of an internal combustion engine.
