The method involves detecting parking spaces (30-35) by sensors, and collecting and storing a parameter (36) of each detected parking space. The parking spaces are offered to a driver of a motor vehicle in an order of prioritization based on the parameter for a determined time, if up to this time more than one parking space is registered. The parameter of the respective place of the parking space is in reverse temporal order of the detection, starting with the last parking space, where the parameter is length of the parking space. An independent claim is also included for a device for executing a method for assisting a driver of the motor vehicle.
