A fuel cell system that simultaneously achieves both the prevention of deterioration of fuel cell performance caused by accumulation of impurities in an anode gas flow path and the suppression of the amount of discharge of fuel gas to the outside of the system. A downstream end section of the anode gas flow path can be opened and closed by a gas discharge valve (14). The gas discharge valve (14) can alternately select a gas discharge mode and a closure mode. The gas discharge mode is a mode for discharging a very small amount of gas, which amount is very small as compared with the amount of the fuel gas consumed in the anode gas flow path, to the outside of the system. The closure mode is mode for closing communication between the anode gas flow path and the outside of the system. In operation of a fuel cell (2), flow of impurities in the down stream direction in the anode gas flow path is checked, and the gas discharge mode is selected when flow of the impurities in the downstream direction is detected. On the other hand, the closure mode is selected until flow of the impurities in the downstream direction is detected. |
