The method involves subjecting a deformation zone of a local pre-heating unit limited on a section or contour line with optical or electromagnetic radiation, before the deformation of a workpiece i.e. sheet-metal board (2), where the duration of the radiation is 0.5-10 seconds. The surface temperature of the workpiece is maintained between 100-600 degree Celsius. A radiation source is arranged beside the material-deformation tool, and irradiance emission is directed to an area of the workpiece, which is positioned in a feeding direction. An independent claim is also included for a device for performing a method for cutting a workpiece.
