PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vertical excavating device having a simple structure and capable of providing great excavation capability and reducing the number of parts dug in vain as much as possible even when digging the ground to form a ditch having small width to dig a hole efficiently. SOLUTION: This vertical excavating device is provided with a base machine 1 installed on the ground, a leader 2 supported vertically on the base machine, an elevating rod 7 supported along the leader to elevate and lower freely and inserted into the ground, a grab bucket 10 mounted at a lower end of the elevating rod openably and closably, an elevation driving device 50 for elevating the elevating rod with load exceeding its self-weight forcedly, a grab bucket opening and closing driving device 20 for opening and closing the grab bucket, and an earth removing board 31 for guiding the sediment 150 dropping from the grab bucket 10 to be removed outside the dug hole 100 when the grab bucket 10 holds the dug sediment, is pulled up on the ground, and is opened in the condition.
