PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an existing breakwater reinforcing method for reinforcing an existing breakwater of a caisson type by setting an additional caisson having an asymmetric cross-sectional shape in a longitudinal direction, along a front wall or a rear wall of the breakwater, wherein the method achieves reinforcement safely and with good accuracy. SOLUTION: According to the existing breakwater reinforcing method, balance adjusting materials B1, B2 are charged in a plurality of chambers 5a, 5b formed in the additional caisson 4 at locations that are shifted from each other in a longitudinal direction of a cross section and having their upper portions opened, and distribution of the weights of the charged balance adjusting materials B1, B2, in the longitudinal direction of the cross section of the additional caisson 4 is adjusted, to thereby maintain the additional caisson 4 in a floating state in the sea by horizontally balancing the same in the longitudinal direction of the cross section. Then a wire 12a strained between the additional caisson 4 and the existing breakwater 1 is wound up by a winch 12, and both the caissons are brought closer to predetermined locations via rubber gaskets 8, followed by connecting the same together by means of connection bolts 9.
