PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating a fuel injector operated piezoelectrically for improving the service life of the injector, and a drive circuit for executing the above method. SOLUTION: The method is for operating the injector having a piezoelectric actuator for controlling movement of an injector valve needle. The method comprises steps of: reducing the voltage across the actuator at a first rate (RT1) in order to initiate an initial injection (42); increasing the voltage across the actuator in order to terminate the injection (42); and once the initial injection (42) has terminated and before a subsequent injection is initiated, reducing the voltage across the actuator at a second rate (RT2, RT3), which is lower than the first rate (RT1), to de-energise the actuator but without initiating an injection. The invention ensures the injector spends a significantly reduced period of its service life with a high voltage across its actuator. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
