Provided are a planar lighting apparatus, which performs display without luminance nonuniformity in a scanning direction with prescribed luminance distribution and has high luminance and a large area, and a liquid crystal display device using such planar lighting apparatus. Outgoing light (16) is outputted from a main surface (17) in a scanning direction (21) of scanning light (13) with prescribed luminance distribution by having a control section (20) control the scanning light quantity of the scanning light (13) to a light guide section (15).
