The device (12) has a base (15) arranged on a section of a cooking surface plate (27). An operating part e.g. rotary-operating part (19), is movably mounted in the base and connected with a signal unit e.g. permanent magnet (24). The signal unit is formed for cooperating with a sensor unit e.g. hall-sensor and optical distance sensor (32), in a hob to detect movement. The operating device is formed without an internal energy supply. A movement section of the signal unit is provided parallel to the plate. The sensor unit is laterally arranged in the movement section of the signal unit. An independent claim is also included for an arrangement for a hob with an operating device.
