PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new aromatic copolyester excellent in dimensional stability and also having excellent moldability and producibility, and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: The new aromatic copolyester is such that 5 mol% or more but less than 50 mol% of the total acid component is a 6,6'-(alkylenedioxy)di-2-naphthoic acid component and 90 mol% or more of the total glycol component is an ethylene glycol component, and at least one compound selected from potassium compound and sodium compound is contained at 20-200 ppm on a metallic element basis. The method for producing the aromatic copolyester comprises subjecting the compounds to esterification or transesterification reaction in their presence with their amounts falling within the range.
