PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image scanner capable of scanning an image of high picture quality which suppresses the generation of moire without adding a driving mechanism for changing a relative distance between a line sensor for scanning a carried document and the scanning surface of the document. SOLUTION: The line sensor 40 scans a document carried along a carrier path 12 through first glass 18 and scans the document set on second glass 20 through the second glass 20. When a CR motor 65 which is a driving source of the line sensor 40 is driven, a relative distance between the line sensor 40 and the scanning surface 25 of the document on the first glass 18 is changed. A scanner 10 is set to a first mode for reading out the document through the first glass 18 in a state that the relative distance is made approximately coincident with a focal distance of the line sensor 30 or a second mode for scanning the document through the first glass 18 in a state that the relative distance is made different from the focal distance of the line sensor 40.
