PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic particle carrying device suppressing the irregular density of an image in a paper passing direction, a developing unit, a process cartridge and an image forming apparatus equipped with the developing unit, and a surface treatment method of the magnetic particle carrying device.

SOLUTION: The magnetic particle carrying device 115 includes a magnetic field generator means 133 and a hollow cylindrical structure 132 encasing the magnetic field generator means 133 and attracting magnetic particles 126 on its external surface using the magnetic force of the magnetic field generator means 133. The external surface of the hollow cylindrical structure 132 is provided with many elliptical depressions in plan view. The many elliptical depressions in plan view includes more elliptical depressions in plan view 139b where a long axis of the elliptical depression extends in a circumferential direction of the hollow cylindrical structure than the elliptical depressions in plan view where the long axis of the elliptical depression extends in an axial direction of the hollow cylindrical structure.
