PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal device having a temperature compensating function that can attain proper contrast ratio. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal device includes at least a pair of polarization elements, a liquid crystal element arranged in between the pair of the polarization elements, and a voltage application means for applying a voltage to the liquid crystal element. The liquid crystal material is a liquid crystal element where a high-speed response is possible, and the rotation of an optical axis azimuth complying with the magnitude and/or direction of the application electric field is possible; and the voltage application means can control the voltage to be applied from the voltage application means to the liquid crystal element, according to the liquid crystal molecular orientation in the liquid crystal material.
