A coating composition (I) for bioactive textile materials comprises (A) a layer-forming nanoparticulate sol, formed by hydrolysis or cohydrolysis of silicon and/or metal compounds, and (B) a bioactive component, comprising one or more bioactive oil, viscous liquid or solid natural (or identical to natural) materials, in an aqueous or water-miscible organic solvent. An independent claim is included for a coating method for bioactiven textile materials using (I), involving: (1) preparing component (A) by hydrolysis or cohydrolysis of silicon and/or metal compounds in a water-miscible organic solvent (optionally mixed with an aqueous solvent); (2) adding the dissolved or suspended bioactive component (B); (3) optionally adding a soluble polymer (C); (4) applying the obtained composition to the textile surface; and (5) drying the layer.
