PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To keep the head precisely close to the recording medium in a memory device without incurring defects. SOLUTION: A head controller related to this invention has a heater control section 801 to increase the current to the heater step by step, an external force sample acquisition section 802 to sample the signals showing the strength of the external force applied to the head support mechanism in its movable direction, an external force evaluation section 803 to obtain the representatives of the external force samples of the sample acquisition section 802 every time the heater control section 801 increases the current, and a contact detector 804 to detect the contact of the head with the recording medium by comparing the representatives with the threshold.
