PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multi-stage adjusting device enabling the fineness of the degree of the node of a rotating body rotatingly operated in a member of limited size by a simple structure and properly usable for adjusting the damping force of particularly a hydraulic shock absorber. SOLUTION: This multi-stage adjusting device comprises a device body 1 having a cylindrical body 2, grooves 4 formed in the inner wall surface of the cylindrical body 2, and an adjusting body 38 disposed in the cylindrical body 2 and rotatable in the inner peripheral direction of the cylindrical body 2. The grooves 4 are continuously or intermittently formed in the cylindrical body 2 along the longitudinal direction. Adjusting members 3 are disposed in the adjusting body 38 along the longitudinal direction. Balls 5 projecting from the side surface of the adjusting body 38 and so biased as to be engaged with the grooves 4 are installed on the adjusting member 3. When the balls 5 installed on the adjusting member 3a are engaged with the grooves 4, the balls 5 installed on at least the other one adjusting member 3b are positioned between the adjacent grooves 4, 4.
