PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve an inexpensive tappet mechanism enabling high workability of tappet adjustment. SOLUTION: An adjusting screw 31 is screwed into a rocker arm 4 of a valve lift varying device 1, and a tappet member 17 is integrally connected to the lower end thereof. The tappet member is provided on the rocker arm so as to be displaceable in the axial direction of the adjusting screw while restricting its rotation around the axis. Its face 17c which abuts on a valve stem 3a is formed in part of the cylindrical face. Both have cylindrical face contact to reduce bearing pressure. Thus, the wear resistance of a valve stem end is improved, if set lower, and the adjusting screw has no need for using a hard material, because of no conventional slide contact directly with the valve stem, and so an inexpensive material can be applied thereto to reduce component cost. Furthermore, tappet adjustment is allowed in a well workable manner using the adjusting screw, resulting in suitable use for the valve lift varying device, in particular. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
