A shock absorber having a free piston is provided to limit the excessive movement of a free piston toward the position contacted with a piston valve by forming a stopper. A shock absorber having a free piston comprises a tube(10) wherein a piston valve is reciprocated, a free piston(30), and a stopper(14). The free piston vertically moved by reciprocation of the piston valve divides the inside of the tube into an oil room(10a) and a gas room(10b). The stopper is placed inside the tube to limit the excessive movement of the free piston. The stopper is also positioned between the bottom dead center of the piston valve and the top dead center of the free piston.
