A composition comprising the extract of Caesalpinia sappn L. is provided to improve antioxidative effects by inhibiting LDL(low density lipoprotein), inhibit toxicity to human body, and enhance economical efficiency by using inexpensive natural products, so that the composition is useful for preventing and treating arteriosclerosis. A pharmaceutical or health food composition for preventing and treating arteriosclerosis comprises 0.1-50 wt.% of the extract of Caesalpinia sappn L. which is prepared by drying and pulverizing body, stem, leaf or root of Caesalpinia sappn L., and extracting the pulverized Caesalpinia sappn L. with water, C1-4 lower alcohol or mixed solvent thereof at 10-150°C, preferably 20-120°C for 0.5-24 hours, preferably 3-12 hours, and is formulated as powder, granule, tablet, capsule, syrup or drink, wherein the daily dosage of the Caesalpinia sappn L. extract is 0.0001-100mg/kg, preferably 0.001-100mg/kg.
