A mobile telephone 10 is provided with a panic alarm powered by a power source 18, supplementary to the phone's main battery 14, provided at an inaccessible location inside the housing 16 of the mobile telephone 10. The telephone 10 is primed to act as a panic alarm, whereby an alarm can be activated by a single button press. The mobile telephone 10 may be primed by pressing a particular key sequence, which may comprise the simultaneous pressing of two or more keys. The supplementary power source 18 may be arranged to power at least a signal transceiver of the mobile telephone 10 and the alarm or, alternatively, the entire mobile telephone 10. |
