METHOD AND APPARATUS OPERATING CONTROL SLEEP MODE IN A COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

A method and an apparatus for operating a sleep mode in a communication system are provided to obtain a power saving effect of an MS(Mobile Station) and reduce a data transmission standby time. An MS(200) transmits an MOB_SLP_REQ(MOBile_SLeeP-REQuest) message to a BS(Base Station)(210) in order to transition from an awake mode to a sleep mode(201). The BS determines whether to permit the mode transition of the MS and transmits a MOB-SLP-RSP(MOBile-SLeeP-ReSPone) message to the MS(203). The MS starts a sleep mode operation corresponding to the MOB-SLP-RSP message(205). The BS transmits a MOB-TRF-IND message in a listening window interval(207,209). The MS decodes the MOB-TRF-IND, and if it does not include an identifier of the MS, the MS enters the sleep window interval(211).
