A non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery is provided to ensure high safety at high temperature even when an olivine-structured phosphate compound is used as a positive electrode active material. A non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery has: a positive electrode(5); a negative electrode(6) containing a material capable of intercalating /de-intercalating lithium ions as a negative electrode active material; a non-aqueous electrolyte held between the positive electrode and the negative electrode; and a porous insulating layer(12) which is disposed between the positive electrode and the negative electrode and contains a metal oxide(10). The positive electrode contains, as a positive electrode active material, an olivine-structured phosphate compound represented by the following formula of Li_ZFe_(1-y)X_yPO_4, wherein 0<=y<=0.3, 0<z<=1, and X is any one metal selected from Nb, Mg, Ti, Zr, Ta, W, Mn, Ni, and Co. A ratio of the volume of the metal oxide to the volume of the porous insulating layer ranges from 15 vol% or more to 50 vol% or less. |
