A method for starting an internal combustion engine having direct fuel injection, comprising of adjusting a number of direct injections per combustion cycle based on a cylinder event number from a first cylinder event. The timing of the injections may also be modified. The number and timing of injections may be based on temperature, whether the start is after idle operation or a vehicle shutdown, or the time since vehicle shutdown. Injection may be changed from partial compression injection to partial intake stroke injection. Adjustment of the number of injections may become independent of cylinder event number after a predetermined event occurs.
