A lateral force and depth control device 26 for a seismic streamer 20 includes an inner housing 30 with a coupling at each longitudinal end thereof. The couplings mate with corresponding couplings at longitudinal ends of streamer segments. The device includes an outer housing 32 rotatably supported on the inner housing 30. A signal communication device (e.g. induction coil) transfers electrical power and signals between the inner housing and the outer housing. A plurality of control surfaces 34-38 are rotatably coupled to the outer housing 32 by releasable couplings 40 (e.g. quick connects). Controllable actuators (e.g. linear actuators, or servo motors coupled to worm gear and ball nut) are disposed in the outer housing and are functionally coupled to the control surfaces. Also disclosed is a method of maintaining the lateral separation between streamers, by measuring geodetic position (e.g. using GPS) and/or distance between streamers (e.g. using acoustic ranging) and controlling streamer position using a using a lateral force and lift device. |
