Two methods of sorting documents of value such as banknotes, cheques, tickets or vouchers are disclosed, comprising forming a stack 12 of documents including two or more batches 16,20,24, each batch being provided either with first and second separators 18, 19, 22, 21, 26, 23 or a single a separator (18, 22, 26 figure 6) to separate the batch from an adjacent batch; and, sequentially feeding all the documents in the stack through a sorting machine to inspect the documents and to sort the documents into output stations in dependence upon the results of the inspection, and either sorting all first separators to a separator output station where each batch has first and second separators (figures 4 and 5) or feeding documents identified as rejects to a reject station and sorting all separators associated with batches having no rejected documents to a separator output station (figure 7). |
