An image reading method and an apparatus thereof are provided to obtain shading data without using a reference sheet and improve convenience in use by omitting complexity for placing the reference sheet. An image reading method comprises a document board non-uniformity generating step(s20) and a shading data estimating step(s40). In the document board non-uniformity generating step, information about density non-uniformity of a document board is generated based on document board reading image data and image data. The document board reading image data is obtained by reading a document board. The image data is obtained by placing a reading medium of uniform reflectivity in a reading area of the document board and reading the placed reading medium. In the shading data estimating step, shading data is generated by using the document board non-uniformity information and the document board reading image data.
