A method for controlling an IM(Instant Messenger) service of a mobile terminal is provided to arouse a user interest and effectively deliver an emotional state by changing the user service interface of IM service at a receiver when making a communication by using the IM service. A user of an IM client 1 executes a conversation window with a user of an IM client 2, another party(S10), and requests conversation(S12). When the user of the IM client 2 accepts the conversation request, the IM client 2 displays a conversation window(S14) and transmits a conversation acceptance message to the IM client 1(S16). The user of the IM client 1 sets a mood function(S18) and inputs a message(S20). The IM client 1 automatically changes a message display type according to the selected mood(S22). The IM client 1 transmits the message with the changed display type and the set mood information to the IM client 2(S24). The IM client 2 searches an image corresponding to the received mood information(S26) and displays it together with the received message on a message display unit of the conversation window(S28).
