In a process to manufacture armour plate, the plate consists of a predetermined number of one or more layer rows of energy-absorbing elements (29) in contact with other at regular points. The elements are placed within a form in the required array and then bonded together by an adhesive and allowed to cure. The void between the elements and between the elements and the form are then filled with a semi-liquid casting mass which is then allowed to cure.
