The calibration block has a measurement face and a recess extending inwardly of the block from a face opposite the measurement face. The recess is inclined relative to the measurement face in all directions from a central region. The measurement face also comprises a reference feature, the location of which corresponds to a specific point on the inclined surface of the recess. The method to calibrate a thickness gauge comprises defining a coordinate system around the calibration block with the origin at the reference feature and noting the actual position of the recess. The thickness probe is then placed over the reference feature of the block at an undetermined offset from the origin with the nominal position of the thickness probe set to zero. The thickness of the block is then measured at a plurality of positions, which are plotted and used to construct a measured inclined surface of the block. This is compared against the actual position of the surface and a value is generated that represents the offset of the thickness probe relative to the coordinate system. |
