A washing machine and a method for controlling the same are provided to inform an operational state of the washing machine to a user by displaying a message that a drain path could possibly be frozen on a display unit, and performing a freezing prevention mode. A method for controlling a washing machine comprises the steps: sensing an ambient temperature of the washing machine(S110); and comparing the sensed temperature to a set limit temperature, performing a freezing prevention mode if the sensed temperature is lower than the set limit temperature, and outputting the message on a display unit(S130,S140).
