A method and an apparatus for decompressing GIF(Graphics Interchange Format) encoded data by using a fixed-size codeword table are provided to fix the size of a codeword table to save a memory space required to perform GIF decompression and simplify a control logic required to implement hardware of a codeword table. A method for decompressing GIF encoded data includes a step of generating a codeword table for storing a codeword string and a codeword length with respect to each of a plurality of codewords. The codeword string is defined by codewords and characters represented before the codeword table. The codeword length corresponds to the total number of characters in the codeword string. The method further includes a step of translating a current codeword in GIF encoded data according to the codeword table to generate a series of characters represented by the current codeword. |
