A method and an apparatus for controlling handoff in a wireless LAN using MIMO(Multi-Input Multi-Output) are provided to prevent packet transmission delay and packet loss in handoff by executing a soft handoff through a MIMO system so as to maintain the association with an old BS(Base Station) while establishing a link with a new BS. A wireless LAN comprises the first BS(10), the second BS(20), and an MS(Mobile Station). The first BS executes packet transmission and reception with the MS which exists in its own service coverage. In case the MS enters into the service coverage of the second BS, the second BS executes a soft handoff procedure with the MS. Using a MIMO system, the MS receives packets from the first BS. At the same time, the MS executes handoff to the second BS.
|
