A process for the production of foam blocks based on expanded starch, involves (a) making lengths of foam which are symmetrical at all points from the centre, (b) cutting these to the same length, (c) glueing these lengths together longitudinally and tangentially to form a layer and (d) glueing layers together to form a block. Independent claims are also included for (1) apparatus for carrying out this process, comprising a very high-pressure screw extruder, supplied with starch for stage (a), a calibrated expansion chamber at the extruder outlet, a dynamic conformation device for cooling the material at the outlet of the chamber, means of cutting the material into lengths, means of picking up the cut lengths by suction and means of applying glue and sticking the lengths together (2) starch foam blocks obtained by the above process, comprising hexagonal layers of expanded starch foam lengths, glued together longitudinally and tangentially with all the faces touching and with the different layers superimposed and glued together . |
