<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent erroneous operation caused by setting of a wrong function when the function of an image forming apparatus is added. <P>SOLUTION: A nonvolatile memory (NVRAM) in a control unit holds a machine type code indicating the set contents of functions and a machine code specific to the image forming apparatus. When a function is added, a comparison is made whether the machine code stored in the image forming apparatus and the machine code held in the control unit match. If the machine codes match, the function based on the machine code held in the control unit is added.
